Working During Summer Travel – Stay Cyberaware!
Story by Ellyce Hill, Strategic Communications Intern, Summer 2023
While working online during summer travel can be convenient and flexible, it can also pose a risk to your online security. From remote collaborations to accessing public Wi-Fi networks, it is crucial to prioritize online safety to protect yourself from cyberthreats. Throughout this article, we’ll explore several essential online safety tips that will ensure worry-free summer travel.
Review the National Cybersecurity and Communications
Securing mobile devices is crucial during summer travel to protect against potential threats. The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) recommends reviewing their tips on holiday traveling, cybersecurity for electronic devices, and international mobile safety. By following the security practices outlined in these tips, travelers can enhance the security of their portable devices not just during the summer travel season, but year-round.
Be Cautious of Public Wi-Fi
While it may be tempting to connect to public Wi-Fi networks, their lack of encryption puts you at a greater risk for a cyberattack. Hackers can access your personal data and inject malicious software into your network. Consider using a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your internet traffic and maintain privacy.
Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts. By enabling 2FA, you provide a second form of verification, usually with a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password. Enable 2FA for your email, social media, banking and travel-related accounts for enhanced security.
Phishing Awareness
Traveling can raise the risk of phishing attacks. Legitimate travel agencies WILL NEVER request sensitive data by email. Be cautious of emails, messages, or pop-up ads asking for personal or financial information.
Shred Your Tickets
Shredding tickets after use can help prevent them from falling into the wrong hands. After each trip be sure to dispose of any printed travel documents. By shredding the physical ticket, you can ensure that personal information like your name or address cannot be easily retrieved or exploited.
Social Media Privacy Settings
While the summer can be a great time to post selfies, remember to exercise caution when sharing travel plans and experiences. Remember to adjust your privacy setting to limit who can view your post to avoid broadcasting your current location in real time. Publicly announcing your absence can make you an easy target for burglars.
Back-Up Your Data
Traveling can mean you rely on your smartphone for navigation, communication and entertainment. Before traveling make a habit to back up important files and documents from your devices. You can use external hard drives, cloud storage services or backup software to protect your data.
Bring a Backup Battery
While public charging stations can seem like a convenient way to recharge your devices, they can increase the risk of malware or data theft. Public charging stations often require some form of communication to capture sensitive data that can be easily intercepted by an attacker. This can be easily avoided by bringing a backup battery or mobile charger on every trip.
Monitor Loyalty Rewards
Loyalty programs offered by airlines, hotels and travel agencies can raise the chances of a cyberattack. Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity by checking your loyalty reward points, credit card statements and account transactions to detect unauthorized use or fraud.
By following these tips you can safeguard your digital workspace, protect sensitive information and enjoy a productive and secure remote work experience throughout the summer months. Stay vigilant and prioritize your online security to make the most out of working online.
