USAO Utilizes OneNet’s VM Service to Host Website

Challenges

The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) was ready to take its website to the next level by moving the site from a shared platform and adding significant, new functionality. USAO searched for a solution that would meet the following challenges:

  • Improve the performance and flexibility of the site
  • Remove limitations on the technology that could be deployed
  • Avoid any effects on the site from non-university sites competing for the same platform resources
  • Guarantee any university power issues would not affect the uptime of the website
  • Ensure the university had monitoring capabilities

OneNet’s Solution

Thanks to a long-standing relationship with OneNet, USAO’s team trusted OneNet to implement a hosting platform utilizing virtual machines (VMs). OneNet now provides USAO’s computing and storage units. This platform gives USAO’s staff total control of their own virtual infrastructure and simultaneously addresses all of their challenges.

Solution Highlights:

  • Pool of computing, memory and storage resources that gives control to USAO
  • Full administrative access for USAO staff
  • Virtual extension to USAO’s existing datacenter through OneNet’s MPLS service
  • Improved disaster recovery that allows storage to be seamlessly copied to other datacenters across Oklahoma
  • Highly resilient computing and storage resources

Results

  • USAO reported improved site speed and reliability for students and faculty
  • Cost savings achieved
  • Improved data security
  • Many maintenance responsibilities placed off of university staff
  • Flexibility to adjust the technology stack
  • Ability to easily set up more servers as needed to load a balanced scalable system
