OneNet Connectivity Powers Vanoss STEM Lab

OneNet’s partnership with Vanoss Public Schools is empowering students to engage in digital learning and pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. As the comprehensive digital communications initiative of the state system of higher education, OneNet is uniquely equipped to serve the growing needs of schools like Vanoss in a digital age.

Using robust internet connectivity, a class of middle school students can simultaneously experiment with robots or engineer rocket launches through hands-on computer stations. Students learn on a module for two weeks then return to the classroom for one week to review the concepts. This rotation occurs regularly throughout the year. The purpose of the STEM lab is to engage students in a variety of scientific disciplines in hopes of expanding their understanding of STEM fields.

“We need students who are competent in digital skills, because they are vital to a successful career in the future,” said Vanoss science teacher Skylar Farrill. “I would be hard pressed to think of a career that does not utilize technology.”

To enable a classroom to participate in a multitude of internet-based projects, Vanoss needs a committed digital network. Thankfully, with a mission to provide reliable connectivity to Oklahoma’s public service entities, OneNet is uniquely positioned to help schools like Vanoss.

Without a robust internet connection, slow speeds would prevent students from completing assignments and inhibit their ability to master concepts. Because of Vanoss’ high-quality connectivity through OneNet, their innovation is supported by powerful network speed.

“By leveraging OneNet’s network for digital initiatives like the STEM lab, leaders at Vanoss are improving the future for our children and all of Oklahoma,” said Vonley Royal, OneNet executive director.

For Isabella Lee, a Vanoss student, the lab has reinforced a passion for science. When she grows up, Lee wants to become a veterinarian. Modules like genetics and body science have helped her develop a better understanding of a field she plans on pursuing.

While the wide-range of activities is able to encourage learning, Farrill is able to better serve students with the help of the digital curriculum, too.

“One of the best parts of the STEM lab is the freedom I have to interact one-on-one with students,” he said. “I can give more specialized instruction to a student who is struggling since most of the generalized instruction is web-based.”

Educators at Vanoss Public Schools are continuously looking for ways to meet the individualized needs of students while preparing them for the future. With a reliable internet foundation, they are becoming trailblazers for the future of education.
